Shawn Stamper's Recycled Wood Creations came about one cold night. On a freezing night, Shawn's firewood became his artwork. Tell us about your business name. My business name is very simple and to the point, it might sound kind of generic but it works for me. What is your creative or educational background and history behind how you created your business? I've always been artistic, drawing as a child all the time. I have a certificate for web and graphic design from an IT school. After doing some print work and a few websites I realized that that kind of work wasn't for me I needed more artistic freedom. It's kinda funny how I came to create wood art.......a couple of years ago my ac/heating unit was being replaced in my house and I was without heat (in the middle of winter) for about a week so I decided to burn some scrap wood in my fireplace and as I started looking at the wood my wheels started turning....let's just say that I ended up freezing in my house for that week lol. How does your city/state influence your craft or how you do your work? My city and state greatly influence almost every piece I make. Being an U.S Army veteran I take great pride in the wood flags that I make and I hope people can see that in my work. I also love making the California flag in different styles and layouts and of course the "drink local" bottle openers are my favorite.....I love all the new bar and grills/pubs popping up in the valley. Can you take us through your process from inspiration to final product? I will spend a whole day outside cutting, sanding and nailing putting together as many "blanks" that I can. Then it's to the computer to lay out whatever my mind comes up with and cut it out on the plotter. I use the plotter to cut out my designs on vinyl then use it for stencils, after that it's all painting, staining and burning. What is a standout or special moment in your creative work so far? I had a chance last year to donate some pieces to Farm House Turlock for a fundraiser, proceeds went to Jessica's House. Jessica's House is a grieving center for children with a staff of professionals and volunteers, it's a great cause and I was very honored to be able to do something for them. What dreams are on the horizon for the future of your brand? I like to keep things small, I love being a vendor at Mod Shop and a couple other local craft fairs. I also get a lot of business from custom orders so I'm happy just doing local events and keeping it simple Are you bringing anything new or special to Mod Shop this year that you are particularly excited about? I'm going to have a lot more "drink local" wood mounted bottle openers with new fonts and embellishments, also I have some Apothic Wine themed wine racks in the works.
